Russia fears spillover of conflict from Afghanistan

KABUL: Russia has warned that internal situation rapidly deteriorates in Afghanistan amid the hasty withdrawal of US and Nato troops from the war- buttered country.

Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov said in a conference on Central, and South Asia, opportunities and challenges that the situation rapidly deteriorates in Afghanistan amid the hasty drawdown of US and Nato forces, calling the political and military situation in the country as ambiguous and uncertain.

Lavrov said, the continuation of the current situation will further destabilize neighboring countries of Afghanistan, adding, the threat of such a scenario is an obstacle to Afghanistan partnership in regional cooperation.

Lavrov pointed out the “Moscow Format” mechanisms, the SCO-Afghanistan Contact Group, as well as the expanded troika format comprising Russia, China, the United States, and Pakistan which focused on making progress in the intra-Afghan process to reach a negotiated settlement and permanent and comprehensive ceasefire.
