Shaheen asks world to unfreeze Afghanistan assets

AT News

KABUL: Taliban’s permanent representative-designate to the UN Suhail Shaheen said the international community needs to honor their promises by providing the Afghan people with frozen assets and also humanitarian aid as the harsh winter is arriving.

In a series of the tweets, Suhail Shaheen said the world must support Afghanistan and unfreeze the assets of the Afghan people.

“The winter is around the corner, so the immediate need for the International Community to disburse on an urgent basis the recently announced nearly one-billion-euro (some $1.2-billion) aid package pledged at a virtual G20 summit for Afghanistan, to all poor, vulnerable and displaced people,” he tweeted.

Suhail Shaheen has promised to be cooperating with channeled agencies and NGOs on the ground to distribute aids.

The senior Taliban member also asked for the resumption of development projects pledged by the international community at the Geneva Conference 2020.

The call on the resumption of development projects comes days after the WFP suggested the donor countries allocate their promised development budget to humanitarian aids to Afghanistan.

The World Food Program has expressed concern over the upcoming winter season as food shortage and health is at its worst condition and added that over 22 million people will be on the verge of starvation if not addressed the crisis.
