Takhar attack leaves 16 border police dead

AT-KABUL: At least 16 border police personnel embraced martyrdom after their check points attacked by Taliban insurgents in northern Takhar province, official said Wednesday.

“Taliban coordinately attacked Afghan border police check points in Yatem Tepa area of Chah Ab district at around 2:30 local time, martyring 16 police, wounding one another,” Provincial Governor Spokesman, Sanaullah Timori said.

He also confirmed looting of Afghan forces weapons by Taliban militants.

Meanwhile, Takhar Police Spokesman, Khalil Aseer has confirmed killing of 16 border police personnel in the attack.

He said during attack a number of border police officers gone missing, but later seven of them returned while few of them still missing.

Fighting is underway to regain control of fallen security check points, he said.

However, Taliban terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack. The group’s spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in his tweeter claimed his fighters staged assault on check points in Chah Ab district of Takhar, taking control of four check points.
