Taliban hope to host regional meeting next week

AT News

KABUL – Head of the Taliban’s Doha office, Sohail Shahin, officially announced on Thursday that a “Kabul regional meeting” is scheduled to take place in the Afghan capital on January 29. This announcement comes on the heels of a meeting held on Wednesday, where Amir Khan Muttaqi, the Acting Foreign Minister of the Taliban, engaged with ambassadors and diplomats from various regional countries in Kabul.

Rasul Mousavi, the Director of South Asian Affairs at Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, disclosed on Thursday that Russia, Iran, China, and Pakistan are anticipated to be in attendance. However, the official confirmation of their participation is still pending.

The timing of the Taliban’s initiative to organize this meeting aligns with the United Nations’ plans to host a gathering of special envoys in Doha, focusing on Afghanistan and its ongoing efforts to appoint a special envoy for the nation. In a parallel effort, Russia, as reported by the TASS news agency, is actively working to convene a meeting involving China, Iran, and Pakistan on Afghanistan before the month’s end. Stay tuned for further updates on this geopolitical development.
