Taliban leaves Kohistanat without resistance

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Taliban fighters have left the restive Kohistanat district in northern Sar-i-Pul province without any resistance after the arrival of the First Vice President Abdul Rashid Dostum along with the national security forces to the area.

The First Vice President is in Northern provinces for over the past one month in a bid to clear the areas of militants and ensure law-and-order there.

Local officials said the security forces managed to retake Kohistanat district in a short span of time.

Dostum arrived in Sar-i-Pul province late on Thursday afternoon after concluding a major military operation in northern Faryab province.

He called on militants to surrender or face death upon his arrival in the province.

Dostum promised to retake control of Balkhab district in near future.

He said he will move towards northern Kunduz province once Sar-i-Pul province was cleared of the militants – provided that President Ghani and the National Security Council agree to proceed.

Dostum joined the Afghan security forces in the frontline in Faryab earlier this month.

He survived at least two assassination plots by militant groups while he was leading counter-terrorism operations in there.

His convoy was ambushed by the Taliban in Qaisar district in Faryab last week.
