Kabul: Ministry of Energy and Water of interim government of Taliban has announced that based on their obligation and repeated requests of the people of Nimroz Province, a certain amount of Kamal Khan Dam has been released to Iran.

“The water that has entered Iran’s territory these days, during the meeting of the Helmand water commissioners with the Iranian side, will be counted in light of the Helmand Sea Water Treaty signed in 1973 between Afghanistan and Iran”, Abdul Latif Mansoor the water and energy minister of the Taliban said in a Tweet.

Earlier today, Kazemi Qomi Iran’s special representative on Afghanistan affairs also stated that with continuous diplomatic interaction and using the capacity of public diplomacy and inter-institutional coordination at the national level, today the released water from the Afghan side entered the wells of Sistan.

Videos that have been made public from Iran’s Sistan and Baluchistan reveal that Afghanistan’s Nimruz has allowed a significant volume of water to enter Iranian territory.

Prior to this, Iran’s foreign and energy ministers declared that they would not cede Iran’s right to the Helmand River waters provided by the bilateral pact between Afghanistan and Iran.

In 1973, Kabul and Tehran came to an agreement to share 850 million cubic meters of water annually, or 26 cubic meters per second, from the Helmand River.
