Taliban seek good relations with neighbors as tensions simmer

AT News

KABUL: Taliban leadership is adopting soft diplomacy in its relations with neighboring countries amid recent tensions with neighboring Iran over border and water disputes.

The Islamic Emirate’s Prime Minister Mawlawi Abdul Kabir in a meeting with Pakistani embassy charge d’affaires in Kabul Obaid Rahman Nizamani said Afghanistan wants “good relations based on good intentions” with all its neighbours.

He emphasized the need for Kabul and Islamabad to expand their relations in regional transit and other economic areas. Seeing the importance of cultivating good relations on its periphery, the Taliban government is trying to build sustainable relations with neighboring countries despite lack of diplomatic recognition.

Both sides have reportedly discussed transit, facilitating visas, Afghan refugees, solution for challenges in commute between Pakistan and Afghanistan borders, and other issues of mutual concern.

Taliban’s administrative deputy of the Prime Minister, Mullah Abdul Salam Hanafi, has also called on Afghanistan’s missions abroad to attempt to enhance relations with world countries.

This comes amid pressure on Taliban from the international community to respect women’s rights as several international organisations and human rights bodies have frequently expressed concern about the country’s gender-based policies.
