Hamid Karzai condemns suicide attacks in Kabul, Logar

AT-KABUL: At least 15 people were killed and about 140 injured on Friday in the wee hours suicide attack near a military base in the capital city, Kabul.

A suicide bomber detonated an explosives filled truck in Shah Shaheed area of Kabul City, near the army base, at 1:00 am. Most of the civilians were sleeping at the time of the blast in the highly populated area.

According to the Kabul police chief, Abdul Rahman Rahimi, target of the bomber was to cause mass casualties in the residential area. He said that many of the victims were children and women.

The blast was so heavy that it destroyed several shops and homes in the area and shattered glass windows in two kilometer radius.

According to dpa, a foreign news agency, the Emergency Hospital received about 90 patients and the emergency unit of Ibn-e-Sina Hospital received nearly 40 injured people, including children and women.

The deputy spokesman to President Ashraf Ghani told news reporters that 15 civilians lost their lives “as a result of the coward attack” and 240 others were injured.

The injured civilians include 47 women and three children, Sayyed Zafar Hashimi said, adding that the president has appointed a special team to probe the incident.

Though, no militant group has claimed responsibility for the attack but it is said that the deadly terror attack was carried out by the Taliban to divert public attention from the differences among the group’s commanders over the leadership.

Zafar Hashimi said the attack was aimed at driving attention away from differences in ranks of the enemies.

National Security Adviser, Mohammad Hanif Atmar, said that the president had appointed a special commission to assess the losses and damages caused by the suicide blast.

He said the president would assist the owners of damaged shops and houses once the assessment report was submitted.

Ex-President Hamid Karzai also condemned the Friday’s devastating blast in Kabul and Thursday’s suicide attack in Logar province where six people were killed and 15 others injured.

Hamid Karzai termed the attacks against the human rights and Islamic values and conveyed his condolences to the families of the bereaved and prayed for the speedy recovery of the injured.

At least six people were killed and 15 others wounded when a suicide bomber detonated a truck filled with explosives in the capital of Logar province on Thursday early morning.
