Three dead in attack on midwife training center in Jalalabad

By Farhad Naibkhel-KABUL: Two armed terrorists stormed a midwife training center in Jalalabad, the capital city of eastern Nangarhar province, fighting security forces for several hours and killing three staffers, official told Afghanistan Times.

In addition to that seven others were received injures in the attack that took place on Saturday before noon.

“It was around 11:30pm local time that two insurgents stormed midwife training center in 3rd Police District of Jalalabad city,” Provincial Governor Spokesman, Attahullah Khogiani said, adding after several hours of fighting, around 05:00pm all the attackers were killed by security forces.

After five hours of fighting, the Afghan security forces killed one assailant, he said, adding the first attacker was killed by his own explosive detonated in front of the center.

“After suicide bombing of first attacker, the second one entered the center and started sporadic firings at midwifes.”

There were 69 midwifes in the center, in which 61 of them, including two children had been evacuated safely, the spokesman said.

The Afghan forces carefully lunched operation to kill the assailants in a bid to rescue the remaining tapped midwifes.

According to him, three people, including two security guards of the midwife training center and a driver were killed.

However, eight others, including three security forces, three civilians and two staffers of the center have been wounded.

No insurgent groups have so far claimed responsibility for the attack. However, Taliban group in its twitter account said the attack has nothing to do with them.
