Sebghatullah Ahmadi, spokesman of the ministry said Saturday that Afghan refugees were 20 kilometers inside Iran’s soil when came under firing by Iranian soldiers. He added that there were women among the wounded.

Earlier, an Iranian medical official in the Zahedan city, provincial capital of Sistan and Baluchestan had said that 14 Afghan migrants were wounded after their vehicle overturned near the city of Saravan.

“We hope that refugees are treated based on international refugee laws. These people were refugees and came under direct shootings. We are seriously investigating the incident,” said Ahmadi.

Iranian officials have not yet commented on the incident. Iran hosts more than two million Afghan refugees, most of them without migration documents.
