KABUL: The US air force has carried out operations to pound Taliban positions in Helmand province in the south that has turned to one of deadliest centers of clashes between Afghan government forces and Taliban who try to capture the provincial capital of Lashkar Gah.
Fawad Aman, a spokesman for the ministry of defense said Monday that the strikes killed a great number of Taliban fighters which was carried out on the outskirts of Lashkar Gah city.
This is the second time that US forces strike Taliban positions in the war centers in a single week. The first attack was carried out in Herat province in the west where Taliban had arrived at the gates of the provincial capital.
Col. Abdul Qadir Bahadorzai, spokesman of the army’s corps of Maiwand, said that Taliban attacked the Lashkar Gah city and the prison late Sunday but faced strong resistance by the army forces.
He confirmed the air attacks on Taliban positions, saying that 38 insurgents were killed. However, Bahadorzai did not clarify whether the aerial attack was done by the Afghan air force or by the United States army.
