UN envoy meets Taliban leader, discusses peace process

AT News Report

KABUL: The United Nations Secretary General’s Special Representative for Afghanistan, Tadamichi Yamamoto, met Taliban’s co-founder and head of the group’s political office in Qatar.

Taliban said Friday in a statement that the meeting focused on the peace efforts, civilian casualties prevention and humanitarian assistance to needy people in Taliban-controlled areas.

The statement added that the two sides agreed to cooperate in the prevention of civilian casualties.

The meeting took place just days before the government calls the consultative Loya Jirga on Sunday to discuss ways to end the war and find peace. Taliban who were invited by the government to the jirga, refused participation, calling it a government conspiracy.
