AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The United Nations (UN) urged President Ashraf Ghani to specify the exact date of upcoming parliamentary elections.
The UN leadership in Afghanistan hold meeting with President Ghani the other day to discuss parliamentary elections.
The two sides discussed different issues regarding the elections including electoral reforms as well as people’s trust over the election process.
The deputy spokesman for the president, Sayed Zafar Hashemi, told Azadi Radio that the UN suggested that date of the upcoming parliamentary elections should be practical, people’s trust over the process should be restored and the polls should not be delayed for a long time. “The UN leadership didn’t mention a specific date for the elections,” he said.
President Ghani had previously said that he will specify the exact date of the coming parliamentary elections within a month. However, officials in the Independent Election Commission (IEC) recently said that holding parliamentary polls are not possible this year.
The president extended the date of the Wolesi Jirga’s tenure recently. A statement issued by the Presidential Palace said: “In line with the constitution and the advice of the Supreme Court, the Wolesi Jirga would continue to serve till announcing the result of the next parliamentary polls.”
