KABUL: The fate of the newfemale mayor of Maidan Shahr, capital city of Maidan Wardak province, has remained uncertain as she is barred from taking office since her appointment five months ago.
Appointed as the mayor of Maidan Shahr city about five months ago, Zarifa Ghafari was supposed to assume office during a ceremony on Saturday. But she has reportedly been barred from assuming office because of intervention of an influential person.
She has been living in Kabul to have her appointment confirmed but in vain. Ghafari was appointed based on a presidential decree and her appointment was confirmed by the provincial government as per decree.
She claims that haji Ghulam Mohammad, brother of the President’s aide Haji Mohammad Musa, is preventing her from taking office.
Haji Ghulam has confirmed his intervention, claiming that Ghafari has been elected as the mayor by committing forgery.
This comes as efforts are underway to increase the role of women in the government leadership and the country’s first female mayor was appointed for Neli city of Daikundi province few months back.
