UNHCR’s Chief Arrived in Kabul Amid Looming Crisis

AT News

KABUL: The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees and his accompanying delegation visited Kabul on Monday as Afghanistan is facing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis with millions of people are struggling with starvation and children are dying due to malnutrition and other deadly diseases.

Filippo Grandi, UNHCR’s Chief told the reporters at the Kabul airport that Afghanistan would be on the priority of the UNHCR despite the crisis in Ukraine.

“But I came here also to say that there is not just the Ukraine, there are other crises in the world, other situations, that need attention, and Afghanistan is a priority for us,” he said.

Grandi told the reporters that UNHCR has been providing support to the Afghans for the past four decades—an era of time in which Afghanistan has seen severe waves of violence.

He said he will meet with the Islamic Emirate officials to discuss the humanitarian situation in the country. “They agree very much that we must look at what are the solutions for the people who are refugees or displaced,” Grandi said.
