Unidentified men hurl acid at girl students in Herat

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: In a new case of violence against girls, unknown men on Saturday had thrown acid on faces of three female students in western Herat province, local official said.

Spokesman of Herat Police, Abdur Rauf Ahmadi, told media that on Saturday morning around 5:00am in the second police jurisdiction of the provincial capital, unidentified persons had thrown acid on faces of the students.

He said that no arrest has been made in this connection, but claimed that investigation was underway to bring the culprits to the court of justice.

The female students were shifted to a local hospital, Noor. The hospital sources said that condition of the girls was stable.

Chairman of the hospital, Jamal Nasar Akhundzada, has provided a conflicting report about number of the victims. He said that only two girls were brought to the hospital.

“We have received only two patients. It is also unclear that what type of chemical has been thrown at their faces. We cannot confirm that it is acid,” he said.

He added that girls were students of the Mahria Hirawi School. He said the students are out of critical condition.

This was the first acid attack reported in Herat province in the past four years.
