Afghanistan’s concessionary peace offer; Washington asks Taliban to abandon war

AT-KABUL: The United States has called on the Taliban to accept President Ashraf Ghani’s recent peace suggestion and put an end to the war.
“President Ghani’s suggestion for unconditional talks with Taliban is more clear and certain than any other suggestions in the past,” said Alice Wells, deputy assistant secretary for South and Central Asian affairs.
President Ghani called on Taliban that his government was ready to hold unconditional talks with them. He also said that the talks could be held everywhere either inside or outside Afghanistan.
“I believe that the second conference of Kabul Process was very important. President Ghani confirmed a way of dignity for political peace and suggested the details of a reliable opinion for peace,” Wells said.
She asked the Taliban to mull over Ghani’s peace offer, adding that she knew the insurgents were evaluating the offer.
Separately, deputy foreign minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai said Ghani’s “clear and comprehensive” peace offer was never voiced in the past.
“I told the foreigners during the Kabul Process conference that we are ready to discuss their military presence with the Taliban representatives,” Karzai said.
Taliban have frequently refused Kabul’s peace offers, emphasizing on holding talks with the US government, a wish that has been rejected by Washington.
Wells also said that Pakistan could play a key role to bring Taliban to the negotiations, adding that the United States doesn’t ignore Islamabad’s role.
