Fall of Kunduz city: Wolesi Jirga accuses Kunduz governor of abetting with Taliban

Abdul Zuhoor Qayomi-KABUL: Wolesi Jirga accused the governor of northern Kunduz province of abetting with the Taliban.

The lawmakers expressed their deep concerns over collapse of Kunduz city to the Taliban and mounting insecurity in other provinces.

Nazifa Zaki, a member of the internal security committee of the Wolesi Jirga, said that handing over Dahen-e-Ghori district of Baghlan and Dasht-e-Archi district of Kunduz to the Taliban was one of the blunders committed by state officials. She said that government officials should be asked for explanation.

Abdul Rahman Shahedani, an MP from Bamiyan province, called on President Muhammad Ashraf Ghani as commander-in-chief of armed forces to spare no efforts to regain control Kunduz city from the Taliban militants.

In the meantime some lawmakers suggested that the United States and UK should be asked to take a clear stance towards Afghanistan.

Shirwali Wardak, an MP from Kabul, said that speaker of the Wolesi Jirga should chair a 40-member meeting with the US and British ambassadors to Kabul to demand the countries to take a clear stance towards Afghanistan.

Nazir Ahmad Hanafi, a lawmaker from western Herat province, also criticized the US policy in Afghanistan and said that former mujahedeen should be moralized in fight against militants.

Speaker of the Wolesi Jirga, Abdul Rauf Ebrahemi, accused the governor of Kunduz province of having link with the Taliban militants. He alleged that the provincial governor has abetted with the insurgents to capture the capital city of the province.

Ebrahemi said that President Ashraf Ghani has failed to ensure security of the country, particular northeastern provinces. “The president in a meeting with the lawmakers and administrative board of the Wolesi Jirga has admitted that he has failed to ensure security of Afghanistan,” he added.

He said that he has directed the internal security committee of Wolesi Jirga to summon security officials, particularly the minister of interior.

Afghanistan Times tried to have the comment of the Governor of Kunduz, Omer Safi, but failed to get his viewpoints.
