Kabul: Afghanistan is grappling with the devastating consequences of climate change as it enters its third year of drought, making it one of the top 10 countries most vulnerable to these global shifts. The nation has already experienced a deadly winter, marked by extreme cold, heavy snow, and widespread flooding in many regions.
The International Rescue Committee (IRC) reports that Afghanistan is now the third most affected country by climate change, a situation that has worsened since last year’s brutal winter. Hundreds of families have been forced to abandon their homes and farmlands, leaving behind their destroyed crops and livelihoods.
In the IRC’s annual watch list, Afghanistan’s ranking has shifted from the worst-affected country in 2022 to the third worst in 2023. However, the committee emphasizes that this change does not signify any progress or improvement within the nation. Rather, it reflects the increasingly severe impacts of climate change in East Africa.
According to the report of the International Rescue Committee, the ten countries that have suffered the worst from climate change include Yemen, Chad, South Sudan, the Central African Republic and other countries that have a small share in global greenhouse gas emissions.
“The world’s most vulnerable populations are already on the frontline of the climate crisis,” explains IRC CEO and President, David Miliband. “To curtail the worst climate and extreme weather disasters, major-emitting nations must take drastic actions to rein in emissions.”
