OIC delegation presses Taliban on girls education

AT News

KABUL – Renowned scholars representing Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) have urged the Taliban to rethink their policy regarding girls’ education in Afghanistan during a Sunday meeting with high-ranking Taliban officials in Kabul. The dialogue encompassed a range of critical topics, with a primary focus on the resumption of girls’ education.

The OIC delegation met with prominent figures within the Taliban leadership, including Deputy Chief Minister Abdul Kabir, Acting Minister of Justice Abdul Hakim Shari’I, and Vice and Virtue Minister Mohammad Khaled Hanafi. These discussions were held within the framework of advancing the implementation of resolutions put forth by the Council of Foreign Ministers concerning the evolving situation in Afghanistan.

One of the paramount issues addressed during these meetings was the resumption of girls’ education, a matter of great concern. Over the past two years, the Taliban has enforced a ban on girls’ education in secondary schools, leading to a significant setback in educational opportunities for young girls. Furthermore, last December, universities for female students were also shuttered. In a recent development, the Taliban took the controversial step of preventing female graduates from participating in the exit examination for medical students in Kabul.

During the talks, the OIC delegation received a comprehensive overview of the ongoing efforts undertaken by the de facto authorities in Afghanistan to address these crucial issues. The discussions also touched upon broader efforts aimed at bolstering security, stability, and overall development across the nation, underscoring the multifaceted challenges faced by the country.

While the Taliban confirmed their meetings with the OIC delegation in Kabul, they remained tight-lipped about the specific agenda and details of the discussions.

This significant engagement marks a pivotal moment in ongoing efforts to address critical issues affecting Afghanistan, with a particular emphasis on girls’ education and women’s employment, underlining the importance of international cooperation and dialogue in the pursuit of peace and progress.
