Taliban regime falls short on all Doha Agreement commitments

AT News

KABUL – The government led by the Taliban in Afghanistan has failed to fulfill any of the commitments outlined in the historic Doha Agreement signed with the United States in February 2020. The agreement, which charted a timeline for the withdrawal of American troops, included vital assurances from the Taliban to ensure regional and global security.

Despite their pledge to prevent terrorism in areas under their control and actively support negotiations with the Afghan government, recent reports indicate that the Taliban-led government has not honored a single commitment specified in the Doha Agreement. Of particular concern is the existence of terrorist sanctuaries in Afghanistan, posing a serious threat to global peace.

Allegations suggest that the Afghan government maintains ties with groups like al-Qaeda, allowing them to operate freely within the country. Heightening apprehension is the presence of Pakistani Taliban leaders in key positions within the Taliban government, coupled with reports of monthly payments to the Pakistani Taliban, raising concerns about financial support for terrorism.

Experts and former military officials are expressing growing concern, viewing the withdrawal of US forces from Afghanistan as a historic mistake. There is a fear that this withdrawal has provided an opportunity for militants to regain a foothold in the country, leading to a complex and perilous situation.

Participants in the Tashkent Conference have echoed these worries, emphasizing the serious threat posed by terrorists in Afghanistan to regional and global peace and security. Reports indicate that Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) has found safe refuge in Afghanistan, launching attacks on Pakistan from across the border.

The consequences of the deteriorating situation are evident, with a continual rise in terrorist incidents in Pakistan following the American withdrawal. Recent attacks in Pakistan have been traced back to sanctuaries in Afghanistan, involving Afghan citizens and further undermining regional peace and stability.

As the situation unfolds, the international community is closely monitoring developments, underscoring the urgency for the interim government of Afghanistan to address these concerns and adhere to its commitments.
