9 rebels dead in Nangarhar violence, drone strike

KABUL: At least nine militants were killed in different security incidents, including a US drone strike, in the eastern Nangarhar province, officials said Friday.

Maj. Hazrat Hussain Mashriqiwal, provincial police spokesman, said that four insurgents were killed when unmanned aircraft fired missile on a car carrying rebels in Goshti district late Thursday.

Ghalib Mujahid, The Bati Kot district chief, said a local police and an elder were killed when Taliban gunmen opened fire on people gathered for funeral prayers of a relative of a policeman.

Mashriqiwal said insurgents raided local police check post early Friday morning which left several militants dead and wounded. One dead body of Taliban insurgent was still lying on the spot.

Khairullah, a resident of the locality, said the firefight lasted for over one-and-a-half hour between security forces and insurgents. He, however, did not have exact information about casualties.

Zabihullah Mujahid, Taliban spokesman, said six policemen were killed and 12 others wounded in the gun battle. (PAN)
