Huge losses claimed as Kabul market blaze put out

KABUL: A massive fire that engulfed a dried fruit market in the central capital Kabul was extinguished after two hours on Friday, but the blaze caused huge financial losses to some shop owners.

The fire broke out shortly after 10:30am in Durab Market in the limits of the first police district and was put out around 12:30pm.

Haji Mohammad Farooq, who owns a shop in the market, said that there were a total of 30 shops in the market and the fire erupted in eight shops. He said most of the shops were used as warehouses for keeping dried fruits, ghee, sugar bags and other food items.

About financial losses, Farooq said the losses had not been estimated as yet but they must be in millions of afghanis.

Another shopkeeper, Ahmad Javed, said the cause of the fire remained unknown, but the market had no fire extinguishing equipment.

“The fire has caused huge financial losses to shopkeepers. I appeal to the government to assist us because if the affected shop owners are not assisted, they would be unable to continue their businesses.”

Deputy Kabul police chief, crime investigation department chief and the first district police deputy chief and Kabul fire brigade officials, who were present at the scene, shied away from talking to the media. (PAN)
