Twin blasts at Kabul sports club kill 20, injure over 70
AT-KABUL: At least 20 people mostly civilians were killed and more than 70 wounded when two consecutive explosions rocked the west part of Kabul city on Wednesday evening, targeting a wrestling club.
Interior Ministry Spokesman, Nusrat Rahimi, said that a suicide bomber blew himself up in a wrestling club in Dasht-e-Barchi area, police district 13. The second explosion took place when people and security forces were helping wounded to take them to the health facilities.
“20 people were martyred and more than 70 injured in the two blasts,” said Rahimi, but could not clarify if the second blast was a suicide bombing.
There was no immediate claim of responsibility but the blast occurred in the area that has been witnessing several deadly attacks in the past few months.
Most of the attacks were claimed by the Daesh terrorist group. Last month, dozens of students preparing for a university entrance examination were killed at an educational center in the area.
“The explosion was due to a suicide bombing inside a wrestling club,” Interior Ministry spokesman Najib Danish said, adding the blast had caused casualties and damage but giving no further details.
Public Health Ministry spokesman Wahid Majroh said four bodies had been recovered and 18 wounded had been taken to hospitals but the final casualty toll had not been established.
Dsht-e-Barchi has been under frequent deadly attacks in the past few months. The latest one happened against the Mawoud educational center that killed more than 50 students and injured scores more.
