42 voter registration centers closed in Jawzjan

AT News Report-KABUL: At least 42 voter registration centers have remained closed in northern Jawzjan province due to security threats, said Provincial Head of Independent Election Commission, adding these centers are located in five districts of the province.

According to Amanullah Habibi head of the IEC regional office in the province, 35 more voter registration centers are under threat of closure due to insecurity in the province.

“Now we are in the second stage, in this phase we have activated centers, and we are trying to activate the rest of these centers in the third stage, in cooperation with government forces,” Habibi quoted by TOLONews, as saying.

He said that 15 voter registration centers in Darzab district, 10 centers in Murdian district and four each in Khamab and Qarqin districts are facing security threats.

“We have activated three voter registration centers out of ten centers and registration is going on, but unfortunately we have lots of problems in Darzab district and so far, we are not able to transfer even the election materials to the district,” Habibi added.

“We, the intellectuals, don’t believe in this election, and if they do not pay more attention, these elections will be rigged elections,” said Halima Sadaf Jawzjan, a provincial council member.

However, top provincial security official assured of maintaining security for voter registration centers, and working hard in this aspect.

“The government forces are trying to provide more security for these centers and open the way for the registration of Jawzjan residents,” said Jawzjan Police Chief, Faqir Mohammad Jawzjani.

Moreover, Jawzjani informed of an operation to be conducted soon in order to perish strongholds of the militants. The clearing operation would be lunched in vulnerable parts of the province.
