Kabul: Afghanistan authorities reported that Pakistani jets conducted two airstrikes within Afghan territory early on Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least eight individuals, including five women and three children. The fatalities occurred in the eastern border provinces of Khost and Paktika. The Taliban responded by launching heavy weapons at the Pakistani military.

As per Reuters, the Taliban’s defense ministry stated that it had targeted Pakistani troops at the border in retaliation to the airstrikes. Witnesses cited by Al Jazeera reported that three mortar shells were fired from Afghanistan’s Paktia province towards the Borki border area of Pakistan.

In a previous statement, Zabiullah Mujahid, the spokesman of the Taliban administration, emphasized, “The Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan does not permit anyone to jeopardize security by exploiting Afghan territory.”
