Attack on journalists, civil society activists jeopardizing peace quest

AT News

KABUL: The Afghanistan Independent Human Rights Commission expresses “extreme concerns” over the recent attacks on the journalists and members of the civil society, warning that the continuation of such attacks would challenge the ongoing peace efforts.

In a statement issued Saturday, the commission condemns attacks on reporters and rights activists, calling on the government to assess the daily basis attacks and provide justice for the victims.

The statement has also called on the United Nations and International Community to support the people of Afghanistan in their hard days and asked the people of Afghanistan to have actual support for the end of war and bring peace to the country.

Target killings of civil society activists and journalists have unprecedentedly increased in Kabul, while no terrorist group claims responsibility.

Fereshta Kohestani, a women’s rights activist was the last one that was shot dead along with her brother by unknown gunmen in her hometown in the eastern province of Kapisa on Thursday.

President Ghani has recently ordered for severe punishment of such attacks’ perpetrators.
