Four British prisoners, accused of espionage, freed by Taliban

AT News

KABUL – Four British men, who had faced allegations of espionage, have been released by the Taliban in Afghanistan. Among them is Miles Routledge, a 23-year-old YouTube sensation known as ‘Lord Miles,’ who garnered attention for his unconventional stay with the Taliban.

Routledge, who had spent several months with his ‘trusted friends’ in the Taliban, was one of the individuals set free by the Taliban on Tuesday. During his captivity, he reportedly lived a life of unexpected comfort.

Another individual, Kevin Cornwell, a 53-year-old charity medic, had been detained in January during a raid on a Kabul hotel on suspicion of spying. His release comes after months of tireless efforts by his wife to secure his freedom.

The identities of the remaining two men have not been disclosed yet. The UK humanitarian non-profit organization, Presidium Network, expressed relief at the news of their release, stating, ‘They are coming home! Thank you to everyone for their support of these men during this difficult period. We are all relieved.’

Cornwell’s predicament stemmed from the alleged discovery of an illegal firearm in a safe within his hotel room by Taliban agents. However, the reason behind Routledge’s detention remained a mystery, as his family claimed to be unaware of any wrongdoing on his part.

While it is believed that at least a dozen foreigners or dual-nationals are still in detention in Afghanistan, authorities have not officially acknowledged any arrests. The UK Foreign Office extended its apologies to the Afghan authorities, acknowledging potential violations of the country’s laws.

In a statement, the UK Foreign Office expressed gratitude for the release of the four British nationals by the current Afghan administration, who had been detained on allegations of violating Afghanistan’s laws.
