Govt. poised to build secure printing facility

AT-KABUL: The government plans to build a costly and highly secure facility to print all confidential government documents, said the Ministry of Finance, announcing that the foundation stone of the printing press was laid down on Wednesday.

The facility will be built at a cost of 70 million Euros, funded by the governments of Afghanistan and Germany, to print all government high security documents in accordance with international standards.

The foundation stone of the facility was put in place by acting Minister of Finance Mohammad Humayon Qayoumi and German Ambassador to Afghanistan Walter Hassmann on Wednesday, a finance ministry statement read.

This facility will print all government documents such as passports, government identity cards and all important paper documents of non-fraudulent quality in accordance with international standards within the country, said acting finance minister.

German Ambassador Walter Hassmann said, “In my last working days in Afghanistan, it is a particular pleasure for me to take part in the ground-breaking ceremony for the Afghan State Printing House and to see this project move forward. Once the State Printing House is complete, the Afghan state will have won a very important additional capacity, being able to produce its own tamper-proof documents. This project is also a remarkable model of Afghan-German cooperation – not only because of the amount of funding that was provided both by the Federal Government of Germany and the Afghan Government, but also due to the close cooperation with the German partner institution of the Afghan State Printing House.

In this project, the construction of new repairs, proper land and safety is the Ministry of Finance responsibility, and the procurement of machinery, equipment and design of new repairs, quality control and capacity building of the personnel is the responsibility of Germany. That until now significant progress has been made in this area.
