Gunmen assassinate Paktika commander of Special Forces
AT-KABUL: The Ministry of Interior says that unidentified gunmen on Thursday shot and killed Azizullah Karwan, commander of Paktika province’s 01 Unit of Special Police Force in Kabul.
Najib Danish Interior Ministry Spokesperson confirmed Commander Karwan was assassinated in an armed attack on Thursday evening in the third Marcroryan’s Ferdowsi Park. Danish said that at least three civilians were wounded and one of the Karwan’s family members also killed in the incident.
Karwan was a reputed commander and worked closely with U.S. special forces in Paktika. There had been many assassination attempts against Karwan, from which he escaped unhurt. Karwan had been targeted by the insurgents 38 times.
In the meantime, the National Security Advisor Mohammad Haneef Atmar has sought thorough probe into the assassination of Commander Karwan. NSA said Karwan was a dedicated and professional soldier who served and trained many soldiers.
“For the time being the martyrdom of Karwan is a huge loss but his friends and fellow soldiers will follow his footprints in full sprit,” he said.
Atmar directed all intelligence and military institutions to investigate the killing of Karwan, arrest the perpetrators and punished them according to the law.
Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid claimed the attack.
