IOC condition for Afghanistan’s participation in Paris Olympic

AT

Kabul: According to Reuters, the International Olympic Committee (IOC) warned Afghanistan’s rulers on Tuesday that allowing young women and girl’s safe access to sports is a condition for the country’s participation in the 2024 Paris Games.

Women’s sports in Afghanistan have been restricted since the establishment of new political set up in August 2021.

The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee condemned the restrictions on women athletes in the country after a meeting in Lausanne that received a full report on the Olympic movement and sports in Afghanistan.

The International Olympic Committee announced that the participation of the Afghan team in the Paris 2024 Olympic Games depends on the progress regarding the issue of safe access to sports for young women and girls in this country.

Human Rights Watch called on the International Olympic Committee on Monday to suspend Afghanistan’s sports until women and girls can play in the country again.

The International Olympic Committee said that direct support to Afghan athletes will continue in order to prepare them for the Olympic Games.
