KABUL – Amidst the massive influx of Afghan refugees into Iran and the government’s recent engagement with the Taliban administration in Afghanistan, Iranian daily Johmouri-e Eslami has renewed its warning about the potential consequences of lax border policies and underestimating the Taliban’s influence.
The article in Johmouri-e Eslami, published on Monday, expressed concern that Iranian officials should not underestimate the activities of US agents along their borders. One key concern is the eastern border, which neighbors the Taliban-controlled territory. The newspaper urged officials to recognize that the influence of US-backed agents extends beyond regions like Palestine, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon, and Yemen. It stressed that the Taliban, operating on the eastern border with Iran, poses a significant challenge that should not be underestimated.
The newspaper also pointed out that Pakistan, once a significant supporter of the Taliban, now views the group as a “major threat” and has withdrawn its support. However, despite ongoing incidents in different parts of Iran attributed to Taliban agents, the warning to address the situation remains unheeded.
Criticism has grown regarding the current administration’s policies toward the Taliban, which took power in Afghanistan in 2020 following the US military withdrawal. Many Iranians now see undocumented Afghan refugees as a potential security and societal threat due to concerns about radicalization among this population. As the situation continues to evolve, Iranian officials are faced with the challenge of securing their eastern border while addressing the complex dynamics of the region.
