Medvedev meets with China’s Xi as Zelensky visits White House

Kabul: Former Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev has met with China’s leader Xi Jinping in Beijing, the Kremlin announced on Wednesday — hours after Ukraine confirmed its President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was en route to Washington to visit his U.S. counterpart Joe Biden.

Medvedev, who is now the deputy chairman of the Security Council of Russia and chairman of the ruling United Russia party that backs Vladimir Putin, “conveyed to the head of the Chinese state a message from the President of the Russian Federation,” state news agency TASS reported.

Quoting a Security Council statement, TASS noted “the unprecedented level of Russian-Chinese political dialogue and practical cooperation” — despite the fact Putin did not travel to Beijing to speak with Xi in person.

Medvedev and Xi exchanged views “on a number of significant issues of an international nature,” according to the statement, which added that Moscow and Beijing have similar points of view on “the most pressing world problems.”

The news of Medvedev’s trip came after confirmation that Zelenskyy was traveling to the United States for a meeting with Biden on Wednesday — his first trip out of Ukraine since Russia launched its military operation in February.

Medvedev, who is also a former Russian president, visited Beijing “at the invitation of the Chinese Communist Party,” Chinese state agency Xinhua confirmed. During the meeting, Xi reportedly pushed for peace negotiations between Moscow and Kyiv, saying he hoped “relevant parties” could “conduct comprehensive talks,” Bloomberg reported, quoting a statement Xi later made to state broadcaster China Central Television.
