Over 250 Taliban killed as Afghan forces ramp up

AT News

KABUL: At least 250 Taliban insurgents have been killed and 137 have been severely injured in military raids by Afghan armed forces across the war-battered country since Friday, the Defense Ministry said Saturday – the latest in a string of counterstrikes against belligerent Taliban attacks that have disrupted security in recent weeks.

Security forces – supported by the air force – carried out raids and counterassaults against Taliban insurgents in Ghazni, Logar, Kandahar, Faryab, Balkh, Helmand, Kunduz, Baghlan, Badakhshan and Kabul provinces, said a Ministry of Defense statement, and as a result 248 insurgents were killed and 137 were wounded.

This is as the Taliban rebels have advanced rapidly, seizing control in many district centres – mostly in northern Afghanistan. Their violent attacks have faced a fierce retaliation of Afghanistan’s armed forces which have been fighting to oust the Taliban out of district centres. Officials have said Afghan forces have regained control in several districts since last week.

Huge caches of weapons and ammunitions of the Taliban have been destroyed and over 12 insurgents were captured in the raids.

Moreover, security forces have defused 42 rounds of unexploded mines and improvised explosive devices the Taliban had planted in public areas.
