Pakistan pushes for strict tracking amid surging Afghanistan exports

AT News

KABUL – In a high-profile meeting chaired by Pakistan’s caretaker Prime Minister Anwaar-ul-Haq Kakar, a robust call was made to intensify tracking measures for the burgeoning Afghanistan transit trade. He emphasized the imperative need for a foolproof tracking system and directed immediate steps for its development. This shaky attitude of Pakistani authorities comes as Afghanistan’s exports to Pakistan have increased exponentially over the past year.

The high-profile gathering, attended by senior officials and key representatives, including Caretaker Finance Minister Dr. Shamshad Akthar, underscored the urgency of creating a comprehensive transit trade management system. Kakar, highlighting smuggling and illegal movements of goods as significant economic challenges, called for swift and effective measures to combat these issues.

Of particular concern was the issue of negligence in handling smuggling, especially in District Chaghi. Kakar issued directives for a complete administrative overhaul and stern punitive measures against those involved. Additionally, he mandated the reinforcement of checks at crucial border areas, emphasizing the need for increased customs staff and enhanced cargo checking facilities, particularly at the Chaman border, to bolster anti-smuggling efforts.

The meeting concluded with a detailed briefing on the progress of an inquiry committee on Afghan Transit Trade. Prime Minister Kakar commended the ongoing work and stressed the swift compilation of its recommendations. Notably, government efforts were acknowledged for the significant reduction in petroleum smuggling.

In a strategic rearrangement, recent tensions between Afghanistan and Pakistan took center stage, driven primarily by attacks within Pakistan orchestrated by the Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). This shift in focus underlines the critical security dilemma in the region, emphasizing the necessity for stronger bilateral cooperation and effective measures.

As both countries grapple with security concerns, diplomatic avenues become crucial for reconciling differences and fostering stability in the wake of TTP-initiated attacks. The situation calls for a nuanced approach, balancing security imperatives with diplomatic solutions to navigate the complexities and ensure lasting peace in the region.
