Russia condemns UN Afghanistan meeting as ‘failure’

AT News

KABUL – Russia’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Maria Zakharova, has criticized the recent two-day special envoys meeting on Afghanistan held by the United Nations, labeling it a “failure” in light of the Taliban’s absence.

Speaking on Tuesday, Zakharova underscored the importance of Taliban participation, suggesting that any new initiatives or proposed formats, including the UN’s plan for a special envoy for Afghanistan, are likely to falter without their support, as well as that of regional nations.

No decision was reached during the meeting regarding the UN’s proposals to appoint a special envoy or establish a small contact group for Afghanistan, Zakharova disclosed, further criticizing the agenda’s lack of detailed elaboration.

At a quarterly meeting attended by Russia, China, Iran, and Pakistan, blame was placed on the United States and NATO for Afghanistan’s worsening situation. Zakharova asserted that the group unanimously held the US and NATO primarily responsible for the current state of affairs in Afghanistan, including its post-conflict reconstruction. Additionally, they advocated for the return of blocked assets to Kabul and the removal of banking restrictions.

While in Doha for the meeting, the Russian delegation engaged in numerous discussions, reaffirming their commitment to bolstering regional cooperation and highlighting the region’s pivotal role in global efforts concerning Afghanistan.
