Kabul: United Nations General Secretary Antonio Guterres on the occasion of Education Day on Tuesday said, “Now is the time to end all discriminatory laws and practices that hinder access to education.”

He added that “I call on the Taliban to reverse the outrageous and self-defeating ban on access to secondary and higher education for girls & women in Afghanistan.”

In his message, the UN secretary general stated that education is a basic human right, and the bedrock of societies.

Guterres said that it has always been shocking that education has been given a low priority in many Government policies and in international cooperation documents.

He added that “the theme of this year’s International Day of Education reminds us that “to invest in people, prioritize education

Today (Tuesday, 24 January) is the International Education Day. The Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization of the United Nations (UNESCO) has dedicated this day for girls deprived of education in Afghanistan.
