KABUL: The Independent Election Commission (IEC) says it has started the recount process of polls in seven provinces, where supporters of presidential contender Abdullah Abdullah did not allow the process.
According to the commission, recount and audit process in Punjshir and Jawzjan provinces have been completed. IEC technical teams finished votes recount and audit in these provinces, the commission informed on Sunday.
The provinces are mostly in the northern and northeastern provinces, where Abdullah claims to have more fans.
The commission said Sunday that the recount process was speedily going on and that the preliminary results of election would be announced soon after the recount was done.
But Abdullah’s allies say that the commission had not decided to whether recount the polls of nearly 1,000 sites.
Abdullah had earlier said he agreed with the recount of seven provinces. But he previously insisted on invalidation of 300,000 polls as condition of the poll recount.
Abdullah’s supporters closed electoral commission’s sub-offices in Kunduz, Badakhshan and other northern areas and did not allow electoral workers for recount in the past weeks.
