ICG supportive of Afghanistan rapprochement with Taliban

AT-KABUL: An international conglomerate for development assistance has lent support to the Afghan government’s continued efforts for rapprochement with the Taliban group.

The members of International Contact Group (ICG) in a meeting in Azerbaijan have described truce overture of the Afghan government as a ‘bold step’ which defines commitments of the government and people of Afghanistan for restoration of peace.

Jointly chaired by Deputy Foreign Minister Hekmat Khalil Karzai and Foreign Minister of Azerbaijan, the ICG members declared their resolute support from peace process owned and led by the people of Afghanistan.

The International Contact Group is a platform for discussions on assistance to the development of Afghanistan and the region in which it is located. This platform was established in 2009 and brought together 60 states and organizations, including Azerbaijan. Together with Afghanistan, Germany acts as a co-chair country of the ICG.

The group also supported free and fair election in the country which could restore the trust of the people on election process and election bodies.
