Taliban capture Jawzjan’s Khamab district
AT-KABUL: After two consecutive days of heavy fighting in the wake of a massive militant assault, Taliban overran the center of Khamab district in northern Jawzjan province, officials said Monday, with local forces having retreated towards outskirts.
“After almost twodays of fierce clashes, Taliban drove out Afghan forces and seized control of Khamab district on Sunday night,” said Security Head of Jawzjan Hafiz Khashi.
Khashi said that Afghan forces have retreated from the district in order to prevent civilian casualties in the district, because mostly residential houses located close to the district compound.
He said that the Afghan forces retreatto Darzab district police headquarter, which is located in 6-7km distance of the district.
Additional forces reached last night and clashes still going on in some part of the district between Afghan forces and Taliban, he added.
He stated that we have requested for more additional forces from capital to start the operation for retaking of the district.
During clashes 10 Taliban fighters were killed and 19 others wounded by Afghan forces, he asserted.
Unfortunately eight Afghan forces were killed and three other wounded during fighting, he noted.
Taliban Spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid in a statement confirmed capture of the district by their fighters and said that 10 police were killed and a local police commander along with eight fighters surrendered to Taliban in the district.
