Azerbaijan arrests Afghan suspect for plot to attack Israel embassy

AT News

KABUL – An Afghan national, identified as Fawzan Mosa Khan, was arrested by Azerbaijani security forces on Monday for his suspected involvement in planning a terrorist attack on the Israeli embassy in Baku.

Khan was observed near the embassy premises at the Hyatt Regency hotel and is currently undergoing interrogation by Azerbaijani authorities.

According to the State Security Service, Khan arrived from a foreign country with the intention of conducting surveillance on the embassy, recruiting a terrorist cell, and acquiring weapons and funding. The agency stated that Khan, along with accomplices, was plotting a terrorist act involving explosions, fires, or other similar incidents that could result in casualties, injuries, property damage, and create widespread panic among the population. The objective was to influence decision-making by state authorities and international organizations.

This arrest takes place amid escalating tensions between Israel and Azerbaijan’s neighboring country, Iran. Iran has faced allegations of supporting terrorist groups in the region, including those targeting Israeli interests. Although the State Security Service did not disclose the specific foreign country from which Khan originated, there is a possibility that he was dispatched by Iran.
