Iran, Turkey deport hundreds of Afghan refugees

Kabul: The Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation says in the last two days, more than 2,600 Afghan refugees living in Iran and Pakistan have returned to their homeland voluntarily and forcibly.

The MoRR said that according to the information of Nimroz Provincial Directorate of Refugee Affairs, 980 immigrants returned from Iran voluntarily and forcibly in the ongoing month.

Also, the Islam Qala Border Directorate of Refugee Affairs in western Herat Province announced the forced and voluntary return of 1,676 Afghan migrants from Iran on 3rd of Asad.

The Ministry of Refugee and Repatriation says that at the same time, seven families of immigrants living in Pakistan, including 57 of them who did not have documents, have also returned to their homeland via Spin Boldak.

Earlier this week Turkish state-run Anatolian Agency reported that, 215 undocumented Afghan migrants, who have been transferred from Edirne to Istanbul, in northwestern Turkey, will be deported to Afghanistan.

According to the Turkish Migration Management Directorate, approximately 28,000 undocumented migrants have been deported from Turkey by Turkish authorities since the start of 2022, a 70% rise from the same period in 2021.

The Migration Management Directorate said in a statement that Turkey deported 28,581 irregular migrants who entered the country unlawfully, broke visa and residency laws, worked without permits, engaged in fraud, and threatened public safety and security.

According to the Turkish ministry, since the Taliban seized power in Afghanistan in August 2021, illegal crossings from Afghanistan into Turkey have increased, as Turkey is the route for migrants looking to enter Europe.

According to reports, about five million Afghans live in Iran and more than three million Afghans live in Pakistan.
