MP seeks govt support in anti-Taliban uprising

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: After a decision by residents of northeastern Badakhshan province to take up guns against militants if they did not give up militancy, an MP from the province said Saturday that public uprisings should be supported by the government; otherwise it will not yield any result.

The first public uprising was launched in Andar district of Ghazni three years back, where the locals succeeded to clear their area of the Taliban militants. Later on, this trend was followed in other provinces as well, including Kunduz, Kunar, Kandahar, Logar and other provinces.

“Public uprisings will not be in favor Afghanistan and Afghans if they were not managed and supported by the government. Such movements were help the country in such a situation where we face growing insecurity and several other problems,” quoted by Radio Azadi, Abdul Wali Niyazi, an MP from Badakhshan said.

He said that required attention has not been paid on areas where people have launched public uprisings; therefore the government should not remain reluctant in this regard in future.

Acting governor of Balkh, Ata Mohammad Noor, recently said that he will besiege people and will defend the country independently, if the government did not pay attention to security of northern provinces.

Members of public uprisings have mostly complained about lack of government’s cooperation.

A member of the uprisings, Faizanullah Faizan, said he has a message for those who want to take part in public rebellions. “I want to tell them that don’t try this because we launched public uprising but we were left alone. Our widows and bereaved families were not supported,” quoted by Radio Azadi, Faizan said.

The Ministry of Defense has said that the security forces are capable of fighting against militants, and are ready to support public uprisings as well.
