Nearly 600,000 Afghans Suffered from Tuberculosis in 2021: MoPH

KABUL: Nearly 600,000 Afghans were suffering from the tuberculosis in the year of 2021, the Ministry of Public Health (MoPH) said on Monday.

Talking to a gathering held in Kabul to mark the international day of tuberculosis, Noor Agha Zayed, head of the tuberculosis awareness department said that the increase of tuberculosis treatment centers in the country cause a reduction in the number of cases of the disease this year compared to the last year.

“Right now, based on statistics, the number of people infected with tuberculosis is 50,710, which is a 10% increase over last year,” said Noor Agha Zayed, head of the tuberculosis awareness department.

According to the Afghan health officials, there are 852 free tuberculosis treatment centres in Afghanistan. The officials urged the international organizations to assist Afghanistan in countering against the disease.

“We call on the international community to work with the Ministry of Health to fight tuberculosis,” said Bismillah Khan, director of tuberculosis control at the Ministry of Public Health.

Based on statistics of the MoPH, the treatment of the disease has recently increase by 95 percent across the country.
