Russia says extremists attempted to slip into Tajikistan from Afghanistan

AT News

KABUL – Russia’s ambassador in Tajikistan, Semyon Grigoryev, has said that extremists have been trying to infiltration into Tajikistan from Afghanistan throughout the year. Despite assurances from the Taliban administration regarding the security of neighboring states, Grigoryev noted a lack of substantial progress.

In an interview with TASS news agency, Grigoryev highlighted that Tajikistan has experienced multiple instances of extremists trying to breach its borders with Afghanistan. Fortunately, he commended the swift response of Tajik security forces in suppressing these attempts.

The ambassador also shed light on the ambiguous situation concerning drug trafficking. Referring to a UN report, he mentioned a significant increase in the smuggling of synthetic drugs, particularly noting a surge in methamphetamine production within the country. Grigoryev expressed concern over the lack of a clear strategy to address this issue, noting a reduction in funding from Western countries for anti-drug programs along the Tajik-Afghan border.

Addressing the eviction of Afghan refugees by Pakistan, Grigoryev raised the possibility of terrorist elements among the displaced individuals in northern provinces of Afghanistan. He emphasized Russia’s commitment to preventing attacks on the security and territorial integrity of its allies and pledged ongoing efforts to address these challenges.
