KABUL – Uzbekistan and Afghanistan have reached an agreement to prolong electricity supplies, ensuring continued support until the year 2024. Discussions between representatives of National Electric Networks and Afghanistan’s energy company DABS covered various aspects of energy cooperation, as reported by the press service of DABS.
Expressing gratitude for the ongoing collaboration, the President of DABS acknowledged Uzbekistan’s role in supporting Afghanistan’s energy needs. The discussions encompassed key topics such as the possibility of increasing electricity supplies, reducing tariffs, addressing visa-related issues, and the construction of the Surkhan-Puli-Khumri power transmission line.
Highlighting the pressing technical problems and energy shortages faced by Afghanistan, the head of DABS emphasized the need for prompt solutions. In response, the Minister of Energy of Uzbekistan provided updates on efforts to resolve technical issues related to electricity supply, affirming the country’s preparedness to supply electricity upon reaching a formal agreement.
Furthermore, the Minister shed light on the procurement of electricity at higher prices from neighboring countries, attributing it to the utilization of gas and oil in the production process. To foster mutual cooperation, the head of the Ministry of Energy expressed readiness to explore opportunities for purchasing coal and oil from Afghanistan.
This extension of the electricity supply agreement reflects a commitment to addressing energy challenges and fostering collaboration between Uzbekistan and Afghanistan. The ongoing dialogue sets the stage for enhanced energy cooperation and regional development.
