AT News

KABUL: The Special Inspector General for Afghanistan Reconstruction (SIGAR) says the Taliban have intensified attacks on the government employees, civil society activists and media workers.

The SIGAR said in a report on Monday that the militant attacks dropped in the last three months of 2020 comparing to previous months in the same year, but it showed an uptick in the attacks compared to same period of time in 2019. There was 17 per cent increase in the casualties inflicted as a result of magnetic bombs.

Afghanistan has recently been hit with an upswing in violence as the negotiations between the Afghan negotiating team and Taliban are yet to make progress.

Afghan officials said that the group was reluctant to engage in peace negotiations and reach a breakthrough on ceasefire agreement to end war in Afghanistan. But a member of the Taliban negotiating team, Mohammad Abbas Stanakzai said in visit to Moscow that the Taliban would agree on ceasefire and peace if the incumbent President Asharf Ghani resigned from his position.
