US: Detention of our citizens by the Taliban hinders positive interaction

Kabul: During a press briefing on Tuesday, US spokesperson Matthew Miller disclosed that the U.S. State Department is actively involved in discussions with Taliban representatives to secure the prompt and unconditional release of Americans held captive in Afghanistan. Miller’s clarification followed discussions regarding the recent release of a U.S. citizen, which had been incorrectly linked to a potential prisoner exchange involving high-ranking Taliban officials.

Responding to inquiries about this release, initially reported by Al Arabiya, Miller clarified that the situation pertained to the transfer of two Afghan nationals from Guantanamo Bay to Oman and was unrelated to any exchange agreement. He explained that the release was prompted by expiring security guarantees, refuting any direct exchange involving the detained American.

Miller reiterated the U.S. government’s unwavering commitment to ensuring the safety and freedom of its citizens. He emphasized ongoing efforts, including engagements with Taliban representatives, to secure the immediate and unconditional release of Americans detained in Afghanistan. Miller emphasized that these detentions present a significant obstacle to fostering positive relations between the United States and Afghanistan.

The statements were made in the context of the U.S. government’s continued dedication to resolving the issue of American detainees.
