Holding parliamentary elections not possible this year: IEC

AT Monitoring Desk-KABUL: The Independent Election Commission (IEC) said that holding parliamentary elections are not possible this solar year.

According to constitution of Afghanistan, Wolesi Jirga’s tenure ends on 21st June, 2015.

Deputy Chairman of the IEC, Abdulrahman Hotaki, told Azadi Radio that holding parliamentary polls are not possible till end of this solar year.

It is worth mentioning that President Ashraf Ghani through a decree extended the tenure of Wolesi Jirga. A statement issued by the Presidential Palace said: “In line with the constitution and the advice of the Supreme Court, the Wolesi Jirga as a legislative body would continue to serve till announcing the result of the next parliamentary elections.”

Gul Pacha Majidi, a lawmaker from eastern Paktia province, said that closing the door of Wolesi Jirga is violation of the Constitution.

However, some MPs term continuation of the Wolesi Jirga’s tenure against the constitution.
